Those who know me know there is little I love more than chocolate. So when I bought my latest jar of Nutella I – as usual – forgot to check the ingredients until after I had got it home.
Imagine my surprise and joy to discover that Nutella is actually doing a great deal towards sustainability, with its main ingredients all mentioned on its website with traceable and sustainable assurances. Thanks also to Nutella, I now know about RSPO, a label that certifies a produce uses sustainable palm oil. I’ve been looking out for something like this for ages, and if I can remember (!), it will be on my shopping list from now on.

Shandin Rickard-Hughes commented on Day 10: Inquisitivity 4 years agoHi Naomi, good news about Nutella. I haven't bought or eaten it in years because they have not always used sustainable palm oil! I wonder when they started being considerate and made the change.. I have read some controversial stuff about 'sustainable palm oil' but I would like it to be OK as it is so useful and in everything. And that would mean all the companies using the unsustainable forest and orangutan killing palm oil really would have an excuse in the world not to do better. Right now. Respond

Naomi Killick commented on Day 10: Inquisitivity 4 years agoI agree - I always feel a bit doubtful when packaging says it's made with sustainable palm oil - but check out their website and see what you think =). I'd be interested to know your thoughts. My next research is going to be looking at RSPO, so maybe that will highlight something interesting.... who knows? Respond

cCHANGE Team commented on Day 10: Inquisitivity 4 years agoHi Naomi, Leonie here from cCHANGE. This is a really great challenge, a combination of habit change and exploration. It's so interesting to read your posts about your love for forests, the statistics on the benfits they bring, and how they are being destroyed, and what you are learning about the food you buy and its impact, and the different schemes that say they are working on deforestation and better livelihoods. This topic really connects with the climate justice theme, as forests and people are so intertwined around the planet. I think I was also under the impression that Nutella had a bad rep when it came to deforestation. It seems like they may have cleaned up their operations, I do hope so. I'll be interested to read what you learn about the RSPO and whether it is credible. On the tea bags, one of the other participants posted this link: https://moralfibres.co.uk/the-teabags-without-plastic/ that may be of interest. So, how is it going integrating this challenge into your life? Do you need to spend a lot of extra time at the supermarket each time you go? What about your friends and family? Are they supporting you? Thanks for your great reflections. Best, Leonie Respond
