Day 7 and this is my first post.
My challenge is to look at the immediate world around me and try to keep my local environment clean and free of litter.
Even filling one bag (supplied by Bristol City Council) is quite tiring. When I started litter picking, I felt really demoralised at the sheer amount of litter on the streets, on pathways, in hedges. However, I do feel hopeful that its a growing movement and others appreciate it.
My aim is to try to walk every day and take a bag with me, filling it up as I go. As they do get quite heavy, short sharp bursts where I don’t have to carry it too far are best.
Hoping the weather starts warming up!

Shandin Rickard-Hughes commented on Day 7: Belated post: My first update – litter 3 years agoWell done, Lucy! I pick up litter pretty frequently in my local park and beaches in Weston-super-Mare, and I agree it can be really depressing and demoralising - it really is shocking how much of it there is when you break the habit of ignoring it that we all seem to have to protect ourselves from the reality. It is such a good thing to do though - I hope that you will find it rewarding - sometimes I even get random people passing me saying 'thank you' or 'well done' - but really I just want to put signs up or make a t-shirt saying 'please stop poluting so I don't have to spend my time this way'. cCHANGE Team commented on Day 7: Belated post: My first update – litter 3 years agoHi Lucy, Leonie from cCHANGE here. What a great challenge! That is a full bag in the picture! How have you gone so far with integrating the new habit into your life so far? Have you been able to do everyday? It sounds like you came up with some good strategies to make it a bit easier for yourself i.e. the short, sharp bursts. Does your daughter help you? I am curious, do you see many people as you go along? And if so, have you had any comments, like Shandin? Or curious looks? In a recent challenge, one of our participants doing this decided to experiment with when he was picking up rubbish in his area, so that he would see and be able to talk to people and they would see him. What do your family and friends think of what you are doing? Are they supporting you? Thanks for the great first post, look forward to following your experiment. Best, Leonie :) Respond

Lucy Backwell commented on Day 7: Belated post: My first update – litter 3 years agoThanks Leonie! I try to get out everyday, but I have been unwell for the last 2 days so didn't feel up to it. The half full bag is in my garden shed! I have met some nice people; dog walkers, mums doing the school run etc... and a few have said they are inspired and want to do the same. Myself and my daughter try to go out on the weekends, until it starts getting lighter in the evenings. We have joined a local community group called the Whitchurch Wombles, who do some amazing work in the local community. Respond

Lucy Backwell commented on Day 7: Belated post: My first update – litter 3 years agoThank you Shandin! Yes I totally agree with you, and the more you notice it the more you see, which is depressing. However, just by doing our bit, we feel we are making a tiny difference, so that is very positive! Respond
