Despite my best efforts, I’ve somehow managed to nearly double my waste mass this week, up to 900g. Though this is due to finishing glassware jars/bottles from previous weeks, and as I had friends visiting over the weekend.
I haven’t bought any new tetra milk packs and tried my local organic shop, but it didn’t have any refillable milk stations. I did buy a few bits of fruit and a «past its best» loaf of bread, but it came to more than £6!
I’ve bought loose tea which I’m composting. The organic shop does have cereal but, I’m concerned over the price. I’m going to hunt now for somewhere with refillable milk stations, and failing that I will try make my own! It has also motivated me to make my own breads again, but still there is all the flour bag packaging and other ingredients (e.g. seeds) to consider.
My flat mate is motivated to try the challenge next month and has been inspired to reflect more often on their use of single use plastics and their waste etc.

Weighing your waste seems a really powerful idea. I have found Sainsbury's and other supermarkets will accept lots of forms of plastic film - this website can tell you where your nearest facility is: https://www.recyclenow.com/recycling-locator I am also finding others getting interested in my challenge and changing behaviours ... a ripple is starting! Hi Reuben, It was great to read your last post and see how this challenge is influencing your life, routines, and habits and inspiring you to find creative solutions. But not only that, amazing to read that your flatmate is going to try next month too. Your post also points to that dilemma around environmentally friendly food vs cost - is that a systemic issue? We are focusing on systems this week, and I wonder if you had reflected on what systems are impacting your challenge. Are there policies, rules, regulations, etc. in place that are supporting you or holding you back in this challenge? Or if you think collectively, what might be holding back taking it to scale? Is it systems or is it culture? Or both? Look forward to an update this coming week, wondering if the mass will be lower. Have a good weekend! Leonie :) Respond
