I work at the School of Education in Mathematics Education and teach on PGCE and Master's courses and supervise several PGRs. I help to run the School's Climate Action Group. I have a family with 3 children, two of them still at school.
My challenge
I want to document (and hope to reduce) all my landfill waste.

So I took my family’s week’s worth of plastic film recycling down to Sainsbury’s. They have a bin for «plastic bags» – I asked at Customer Services and they said any soft plastic would be okay in there. Not sure about crisp packets though? And further research into old toothpaste tubes suggests they can’t be recycled – so that went in landfill today. 

The plastics feels like progress though – easily halving what we would have put in landfill this week – and definitely something we should be able to offer at the School/University I would think?

    That is really good to know Alf. We get our weekly shop delivered from Sainsbury's as it is a long way from home to a supermarket. It would be wonderful (in an ideal world) if when they delivered they might take that film recycling back with them - a bit like the milk delivery in olden times (and still for my parents) collecting the empty bottles. Don't know if we have any influence there though next time you are there they may have a suggestions box! Respond

      Great work Alf! It really is amazing how much fil plastic we generate from the packaging of everything! Yes crisp packets can go in there. Also, there is one optiong for tooth paste, brushes and packaging through terracycle if you have a collection point anywhere near you... https://www.terracycle.com/en-GB/brigades/colgate-uk. We have been doing this for a few years, got a little box we save up for ages then take it to Bristol (we live in Weston) - one more thing not going to landfill! Respond
